Laser plasma interactions in fused silica cavities

چکیده
The effect of laser energy on formation of a plasma inside a cavity was investigated. The temperature and electron number density of laser-induced plasmas in a fused silica cavity were determined using spectroscopic methods, and compared with laser ablation on a flat surface. Plasma temperature and electron number density during laser ablation in a cavity with aspect ratio of 4 increased faster with irradiance after the laser irradiance reached a threshold of 5 GW/cm. The threshold irradiance of particulate ejection was lower for laser ablation in a cavity compared with on a flat surface; the greater the cavity aspect ratio, the lower the threshold irradiance. The ionization of silicon becomes saturated and the crater depths were increased approximately by an order of magnitude after the irradiance reached the threshold. Phase explosion was discussed to explain the large change of both plasma characteristics and mass removal when irradiance increased beyond a threshold value. Self-focusing of the laser beam was discussed to be responsible for the decrease of the threshold in cavities.

Structural modifications in fused silica due to laser damage induced shock compression
High power laser pulses can produce damage in high quality fused silica optics that can lead to its eventual obscuration and failure. Current models suggest the initiation of a plasma detonation due to absorbing initiators and defects, leading to the formation of shock waves. Recent experiments have found a densified layer at the bottom of damage sites, as evidence of the laser-damage model. We...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulation of ultrafast laser ablation of fused silica
Ultrafast laser ablation of fused silica is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Ionization and generation of free electrons, absorption of the laser energy by free electrons and energy coupling between free electrons and ions are considered. The BKS potential is used to describe molecular interactions and is modified to include the effect of free electrons. Temperature, density, and m...

A semiconductor laser whose cavities are ‘‘self-formed’’ due to strong optical scattering in highly disordered gain media is demonstrated. The lasers are made of zinc oxide polycrystalline films grown on amorphous fused silica substrates. Lasing occurs at an ultraviolet wavelength of ;380 nm under optical pumping. Actual images of the microscopic laser cavities formed by multiple scattering hav...
متن کاملInteraction of Ultrashort-Laser Pulses with Induced Undercritical Plasmas in Fused Silica
Ultrafast light-material interactions near the damage threshold are often studied using postmortem analysis of damaged dielectric materials. Corresponding simulations of ultrashort pulse propagation through the material are frequently used to gain additional insight into the processes leading to such damage. However, comparison between such experimental and numerical results is often qualitativ...
